A program launched by Attorney General Ashley Moody – and sweetened by Good Greek Moving & Storage owner Spero Georgedakis – has already resulted in hundreds of police officers moving to the Sunshine State from other places around the country.

More than 600 law enforcement officers and first responders have already relocated to Florida in the past year. Many more are expected to follow.

Moody created the program, called Be a Florida Hero, in 2021. The state of Florida is offering police officers who relocate to the Sunshine State a $5,000 signing bonus, help with a downpayment on a home, and up to $10,000 to adopt a child.

In 2022, Georgedakis decided to support the program by offering relocating law enforcement officers discounts on moving costs, including packing services, when they come to Florida.

“My goal here isn’t to deplete the NYPD of their officers, these are officers who are already contemplating leaving,” Georgedakis told CBS New York. “As a former police officer, now a leader in my industry, I’m going to make sure these families make it to where they want to go.”

More Than 1,200 NYPD Officers Resign

CBS New York reported that the number of resignations from the New York City Police Department reached the highest total in two decades in 2022. As of November 2022, 1,225 officers had left the force in New York. Some of those have made their way to Florida.

Officers from other states have joined them. DeSantis reported via Twitter in late 2022 that more than 600 officers have moved to Florida from other states through the Be a Florida Hero program.

“We are proud to welcome law enforcement officers from across the nation to Florida, where they are appreciated,” DeSantis Tweeted.

Former Police Officer Supports Be a Hero Program

Georgedakis founded Good Greek Moving & Storage after a successful career as a police officer, serving in South Florida, mostly as part of an elite S.W.A.T. team. He understands the dangers of the profession and the lack of respect officers get in some parts of the country.

From the moment the Be a Hero Program was launched, Georgedakis has been a strong supporter. He eventually decided to increase his support by offering a discount. In a commercial playing throughout the country, Georgedakis invites officers to Florida.

“As a former police officer, I know first-hand how important law enforcement is in keeping us all safe. That’s why Good Greek is a proud supporter of the Be a Florida Hero program,” Georgedakis says in the commercial. “Good Greek is proud to support law enforcement.”

Georgedakis expects that Good Greek will help at least 100 officers make the move to Florida.

Good Greek Moving & Storage is Florida’s largest independent moving company. Moving and storage are part of the Total Relocation Services offered by Good Greek, including realty, mortgage, junk removal and auto transport services.

While Hurricane Ian was a destructive force when it swept across the state, the people of Florida have again shown their resolve and community spirit by coming together to help those who lost their homes and belongings during the hurricane.

Hurricane Ian now ranks as the deadliest hurricane to strike Florida since 1935, with more than 120 people dying in the storm. It also left millions without power and destroyed the homes, cars, and belongings of thousands of people.

Good Greek Moving is proud to call Florida home and has been happy to help with the relief effort that started immediately after the storm left the state.

“In times of need, Floridians have shown again and again that we come together,” said Spero Georgedakis, founder and CEO of Good Greek Moving. “We plan to continue doing everything we can to help out fellow Floridians who were hit hard by Hurricane Ian to get back on their feet.”

Helping Out Across the State

Good Greek Moving immediately donated trucks to carry goods to places across the state that experienced damage from Hurricane Ian. That ranged from Pembroke Pines in South Florida, where outer bands from Hurricane Ian spawned devastating tornadoes, to the Tampa Bay area and Port Charlotte in Southwest Florida.

Some goods came from the Oasis Project, a South Florida non-profit that supports foster families. They sent help to hurricane survivors, especially children. The items included clothes, food, and toys.

Tampa Bay Rays Relief Drive

Good Greek Moving is the official mover of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team, both owned by the Rays. The Rays held donation drives in St. Petersburg and also a donation drive at the Rowdies’ home game on Oct. 8.

In a statement about the relief effort, Rays Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg said, “While we celebrate our fourth consecutive postseason appearance, we cannot forget all those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Ian. I’m proud that we are organizing, supporting, and donating to relief efforts across Tampa Bay and grateful to this wonderful community for coming together to support those in need.”

Good Greek Moving supplied trucks to carry goods gathered at a Rays Up Drive-By donation event set up at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and Westshore Plaza in Tampa. Fans who donated to hurricane relief efforts received specialized flags and yard signs.

The event, done in conjunction with the City of St. Petersburg and the City of Tampa, also involved United Way Charlotte County and Feeding Tampa Bay. Donations included food, pet supplies, batteries, toiletry products, baby formula, baby diapers, towels and sheets, and much more. People also can donate directly to the Rays hurricane relief effort at the Rays site.

Good Greek Moving will continue to party with the state’s sports teams, charities, law enforcement, and other officials to offer help in any way the company can to provide aid to those devastated by Hurricane Ian.

St. Petersburg, Florida, USA

Tampa Bay continues to grow rapidly. From the bustling downtowns of Tampa and St. Petersburg to the quiet, leafy avenues of neighborhoods such as Westchase, Carrollwood, Hyde Park, Old Northeast, and Palma Ceia, the area has become a magnet for retirees and young professionals alike.

If you’re reading this because you want to know about moving to Tampa Bay, you are far from alone. Even with the rapid growth in the past two decades, Tampa and the surrounding area still have the feeling of getting in on something relatively early. That’s why businesses and individuals continue to make Tampa Bay their home.

A Popular Destination

More people than ever are moving to Tampa Bay because of the weather, job opportunities, lifestyle, and proximity to a unique mix of fantastic beaches, amusement parks, and restaurants.

But people also want to know about moving to Tampa Bay in terms of what it’s actually like living there. Here’s some insight into five key areas.

Tampa Bay Growth

Signs of growth are everywhere. If you have not visited Tampa in a few years, you might not recognize the place. Downtown has especially undergone a transformation, with the addition of more residential living, including the Water Street Tampa project. In areas such as Seminole Heights north of downtown Tampa, you’ll see construction cranes everywhere. Downtown St. Petersburg also is undergoing a transformation, with new residential and commercial projects planned for the area around Tropicana Field.

That is not likely to end anytime soon. Zillow ranked the Tampa Bay housing market the hottest in the country for 2022, passing Austin, Texas, as well as big growth cities in the southeast, including Jacksonville, Charlotte, and Raleigh. The trend is clear, people are moving to Tampa every day for a variety of reasons.

Tampa Bay Neighborhoods

All the growth has not impacted one of the Tampa Bay area’s biggest strengths: great neighborhoods. Because Tampa Bay is so big, you can find an area that suits your tastes and needs. It just will take a bit of searching because there’s a lot to consider.

The downtown areas of Tampa, St. Petersburg, and Clearwater are all worth looking into for urban living (although all three are much greener and smaller than what someone from Chicago or any big city in the Northeast is used to seeing). Old Northeast and Roser Park near downtown St. Petersburg and Hyde Park, Palma Ceia, and Davis Islands near downtown Tampa also provide the charm of older homes and (in some cases) brick streets.

For more affordable homes in the suburban areas, Tampa Bay offers a wide variety of choices, each with good schools, safe streets, great parks, and plenty of shady trees. They include:

  • Carrollwood
  • Forest Hills
  • Westchase
  • Tampa Heights
  • Northdale
  • Tampa Palms
  • Kenwood
  • Euclid St. Paul’s

That’s just scratching the surface. There are also satellite communities that are still close to the city centers, especially by big-city standards. They include Land O’Lakes, Brandon, Wesley Chapel, Pinellas Park, and Seminole.

Tampa Bay Restaurants

You’re going to eat well when you eat out. With the influx of so many new people from around the country and the world, the food scene in Tampa Bay has greatly expanded in recent years. And it was already good. You’ll find a mix of old and new favorites, including Columbia Restaurant (where you can still catch a flamenco dancers show), Wright’s Gourmet House, Bern’s Steakhouse, Bella’s Italian Cafe, Oystercatchers, Datz Tampa, Frenchy’s Rockaway Grille on the beach in Clearwater, Udele, On Swann, La Segunda Bakery (for breakfast or a Cuban sandwich), West Tampa Sandwich Shop, Byblos and Bayshore Mediterranean Grille.

Again, consider this a “scratching the surface” list for those new to the area. There are hundreds of restaurants and food trucks to check out in Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay Diversity

Tampa Bay also has grown remarkably diverse in the 21st century. For example, Florida has one of the highest populations of Arab Americans, and Tampa Bay is home for many of them. There are also many immigrants from the Caribbean islands, Europe and South America – almost 18 percent of Tampa’s population is from another country. There are also large populations of American-born residents who are Black, Hispanic, and Asian.

This wonderful mix of people leads to a great diversity of restaurants, cultural attractions, and music in Tampa Bay. It’s a true melting pot of people from everywhere.

Tampa Bay Taxes

There are no state income taxes in Florida. That’s always something worth learning when you want to know about moving to Tampa Bay or anywhere in the Sunshine State. Also, if you buy a home in Tampa Bay, you qualify for the Homestead Exemption which allows you to apply a $25,000 exemption to your home’s first $50,000 in assessed value. This applies to all taxes.

These are just some of the many things you will experience when you move to Tampa Bay. if you want to learn about Tampa and the surrounding areas, check out more information on moving to the Bay area.

Success when starting a service business doesn’t happen overnight. Owners succeed when they establish a plan that prioritizes milestones, focuses on customer experience, reduces risk, and includes hiring talented people.

It takes dedication, hard work, and attention to detail. But for those who aspire to run their own business, it’s well worth the effort. This includes everyone from those who open a moving company franchise to those who launch a software startup.

The following look at proven factors that lead to success when starting a service business, drawn from business leaders who have already put them to use.

Creating a Plan That Emphasizes Milestones

Creating a business plan is something every business should do, but it’s a step many business owners skip. A plan is important for a number of reasons, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Considering the details. A written business plan helps new owners become familiar with all the details needed to create a successful business model. Knowing the details also allows owners to take steps to identify potential problem areas and address them before they happen and hurt the business.

Obtaining funding. If a business needs capital investment to launch, a business plan shows interested investors financial projections and a company’s profit potential. It also can help to more easily secure suppliers and workers.

Unique selling point. A business plan establishes what your company brings to the table that others do not. This unique selling point establishes a company’s brand and how it will solve a problem for customers.

Understanding startup costs. A business plan also identifies all the costs associated with a startup, as well as any ongoing expenses required to successfully run a company. That reduces the risk of unexpected costs.

Focus on Customer Experience

Successful businesses, especially those in the service sector,  maintain a laser-like focus on identifying a problem for consumers and then providing products and services that solve it. Business owners should devote a great deal of their time to customer experience and delivering the highest quality products and services to meet their needs.

One example of how this pays off is with social media. Customers now can immediately share their buying experience with others online. Happy customers provide free and impactful marketing to your business. Earning this type of praise and positive feedback requires understanding and meeting the always evolving needs of customers.

Part of the success with customers also involves completing a service through to the end. Businesses should focus on the complete customer experience, from first contact all the way through to delivery of the product or service and following up to ensure they were satisfied.

Reducing Risk

Meeting customer needs is a big part of reducing risk when it comes to success when starting a service business. Satisfied customers will transform into loyal, long-term customers. But it’s equally important for new businesses to manage growth. Rapid growth can disrupt a business, bringing operations to a halt and making a new business a victim of its own success. Businesses also should look into insurance they need to protect themselves against theft, natural disasters, and other disruptive events.

Hiring Talented People

A great employee is invaluable to a business, especially a new one. Talented employees who are willing to work hard as part of a team can make growing a business much easier. The ability to delegate important tasks also frees owners up to manage some of the other issues on this list and maintain a more “big picture” mindset toward their business.

Connect With Customers

Personalizing a customer’s experience increases the chance they will return to your business, as well as tell others about your service. Social media offers a chance to do this, giving businesses a chance to both interact with individual customers and reach thousands with important announcements (new products, special discounts, etc.). The more personalized a business can make communication with individual customers, the more special they will feel. People who feel special not only become loyal customers but also bring in new potential clients.

Thinking Ahead and Adapting to Change

Success in a service business means staying up-to-date on what customers expect from your particular type of business. This requires updating the business plan, considering all aspects of your products and services, and reviewing current contracts. By tracking these important parts of the business, opportunities will emerge.

The ability to quickly pivot and adapt to these changes also is key to success. It’s important to have a mentality that things will change. It’s impossible to stay with exactly the same model and prove successful over a long period of time. The ability to adapt to change is key to long-term business success in every industry, but the service industry often requires the most flexibility.

The secrets to success when starting a service business all revolve around hard work and making smart moves. By maintaining a focus on these factors, new franchise and business owners increase their chances of keeping a business running for years to come.

Florida Hero Program Attracts

For any first responder who has thought about moving to Florida to advance their career, there’s never been a better time. The state’s leaders, including Gov. Ron DeSantis, have taken extraordinary steps to support current first responders in the state and to attract newcomers.

Through the Be a Florida Hero program and the Florida Hero Initiative, the state has put its money where its mouth is when it comes to supporting law enforcement officers, firefighters, paramedics, emergency medical technicians and other first responders.

DeSantis recently underscored that commitment by pledging $400 million to fund proposals that will increase the salaries of Florida’s state law enforcement officers, correctional officers and state special risk firefighters. The money also will provide $1,000 bonuses to first responders across the state.

“While other states have turned their backs on law enforcement, even calling to ‘defund the police,’ in Florida we continue to support the men and women in law enforcement,” the governor said in a news release. “I am proud to propose larger and longer-lasting measures to help our state recruit and retain the best law enforcement officers in the nation and to provide $1,000 bonuses for first responders and law enforcement officers for the second year in a row.”

Attracting New Police Officers to Florida

The Be a Florida Hero Program, launched by Florida Attorney General, Ashley Moody, is a nationwide law enforcement recruitment initiative that seeks to attract the best law enforcement officers to the Sunshine State.

“Our leaders value the tremendous sacrifice of those that take the oath to protect and serve,” said Moody in a video launching the program. “In the state of Florida, we support law enforcement and we’re not afraid to say it. From Miami to Tallahassee, from Tampa to Jacksonville, our brave men and women answer the call every day to protect and serve, and here in Florida, we honor that service.”

The program invites those living in the state, or those “wishing you were,” to look at the potential jobs in law enforcement in the state. Moody promises the state will always support law enforcement. DeSantis has backed up that idea with many a variety of initiatives in recent years.

Financial Support During Pandemic

In addition to healthcare workers, the pandemic has impacted the lives of first responders more than other segments of the population. DeSantis and Florida leaders decided to create a Florida Heroes Initiative that helps support first responders.

It involved allocating $208 million through the state Department of Economic Opportunity to provide one-time relief payments of up to $1,000 to more than 193,000 first responders. That number includes 49,000 law enforcement officers, 40,000 EMTs, 35,000 firefighters and 33,000 paramedics across the state.

DeSantis appeared in person to distribute some of the checks, including those given to officers in Jacksonville. He said, “First responders work every single day – no matter the conditions – to keep us safe. That was perhaps never more apparent than during the last year and a half during the pandemic. I am proud to deliver these checks to show our immense gratitude for their service.”

The recently announced new proposal includes increasing new state officers’ pay by 20 percent and veteran officers’ pay by 25 percent. It also includes a proposed $5,000 bonus for anyone who becomes a new law enforcement officer in Florida.

The hope is to attract the best and the brightest law enforcement officers and other first responders to the state. In Florida, supporting law enforcement is a priority. As a former police officer and a supporter of organizations that benefit first responders, Good Greek owner Spero Georgedakis is happy to see support for first responders from the highest levels of state government.

Franchises offer an established support system that makes the transition into running a business easier. But before deciding on whether to pursue a franchise, it’s important to ask questions at the early stages as you research franchise opportunities.

Common Questions About Franchise Opportunities

The answers to these questions can help you decide whether a franchise opportunity is right for you.

What Are My Upfront Costs?

This starts with finding out what is included when you pay the franchise fee, as well as any other required fees. Costs can include equipment or property leases as well as being required to buy products and services from specific vendors.

Will You Get Help Finding a Location?

Many franchises already have a physical location for a franchise, but many do not. As noted by Forbes, it’s wise to ask for help in this area as the franchisor should have the best information on the best sites in your area.

What Kind of Training and Support Will do You Get?

Some franchisors have training programs in place not only for new franchise owners but the employees they hire. Other types of support can include online and traditional marketing, as well as assistance on issues such as holding a grand opening.

Will You Get Protection From Competitors?

It’s important to know if the franchisor plans to open other locations in your geographic area. While that makes sense in some types of franchises, in others it could create unwanted competition. And if there’s a guarantee to not grant another franchise in the area, how long will the guarantee last?

What Type of Financial Support Is Available?

Businesses routinely have costs for training, legal services, operating licenses, insurance, marketing, and advertising. It’s important to know what type of financial support is available in these areas.

What Makes a Franchise Successful in This Industry?

In all types of business, there are metrics for determining the businesses that rank at the top and those that struggle at the bottom. To inform your own goal-setting, you need to know what constitutes success in the franchise’s industry and the differences between the most and least successful franchises.

What Are The Terms of Selling the Franchise?

At some point, a franchise owner may decide to move on to other opportunities or have to get out of the business for other reasons (a family move, illness, etc.) It’s key in these situations to know what the rules are for when and who you can sell to, and to what extent you need permission from the franchisor.

These questions to ask when researching franchise opportunities offer the chance to get a clearer picture of the deal you are considering. While owning a franchise is a great way to become your own boss and run a business, it’s important to have all the information you need to become successful

Happy Thanksgiving! We wish everyone the best time with family and friends, as the holiday fills all of our homes with warmth and laughter. Enjoy the feasting!

In an effort to say thank you to the hardest working members of the Good Greek team we distributed 200 turkeys to movers and drivers at all three of our locations.

Good Greek delivered the turkeys in a refrigerated truck throughout the day. Surprising workers in Ft. Lauderdale, then West Palm Beach, and finishing the day in Tampa.

Special thanks to all of the team members who helped coordinate the effort and distribute the turkeys!
