Good Greek Employees Pose with Truck after Assisting with Hurricaine Ian Relief

While Hurricane Ian was a destructive force when it swept across the state, the people of Florida have again shown their resolve and community spirit by coming together to help those who lost their homes and belongings during the hurricane.

Hurricane Ian now ranks as the deadliest hurricane to strike Florida since 1935, with more than 120 people dying in the storm. It also left millions without power and destroyed the homes, cars, and belongings of thousands of people.

Good Greek Moving is proud to call Florida home and has been happy to help with the relief effort that started immediately after the storm left the state.

“In times of need, Floridians have shown again and again that we come together,” said Spero Georgedakis, founder and CEO of Good Greek Moving. “We plan to continue doing everything we can to help out fellow Floridians who were hit hard by Hurricane Ian to get back on their feet.”

Helping Out Across the State

Good Greek Moving immediately donated trucks to carry goods to places across the state that experienced damage from Hurricane Ian. That ranged from Pembroke Pines in South Florida, where outer bands from Hurricane Ian spawned devastating tornadoes, to the Tampa Bay area and Port Charlotte in Southwest Florida.

Some goods came from the Oasis Project, a South Florida non-profit that supports foster families. They sent help to hurricane survivors, especially children. The items included clothes, food, and toys.

Tampa Bay Rays Relief Drive

Good Greek Moving is the official mover of the Tampa Bay Rays baseball team and the Tampa Bay Rowdies soccer team, both owned by the Rays. The Rays held donation drives in St. Petersburg and also a donation drive at the Rowdies’ home game on Oct. 8.

In a statement about the relief effort, Rays Principal Owner Stuart Sternberg said, “While we celebrate our fourth consecutive postseason appearance, we cannot forget all those suffering in the wake of Hurricane Ian. I’m proud that we are organizing, supporting, and donating to relief efforts across Tampa Bay and grateful to this wonderful community for coming together to support those in need.”

Good Greek Moving supplied trucks to carry goods gathered at a Rays Up Drive-By donation event set up at Tropicana Field in St. Petersburg and Westshore Plaza in Tampa. Fans who donated to hurricane relief efforts received specialized flags and yard signs.

The event, done in conjunction with the City of St. Petersburg and the City of Tampa, also involved United Way Charlotte County and Feeding Tampa Bay. Donations included food, pet supplies, batteries, toiletry products, baby formula, baby diapers, towels and sheets, and much more. People also can donate directly to the Rays hurricane relief effort at the Rays site.

Good Greek Moving will continue to party with the state’s sports teams, charities, law enforcement, and other officials to offer help in any way the company can to provide aid to those devastated by Hurricane Ian.

Good Greek Moving & Storage would like to highlight Project Dynamo, a Tampa-based nonprofit organization that focuses on saving Americans and allies from hostile territories. While Project Dynamo started by helping people get out of Afghanistan, it has expanded its operations to include Ukraine.

People can donate to Project Dynamo by visiting this link or by visiting the Project Dynamo website.

Digital Dunkirk and Dynamo II

Project Dynamo was launched in Tampa initially to help bring people out of Afghanistan after U.S. troops withdrew from the country in 2021. Project Dynamo encompasses two operations — Digital Dunkirk and Dynamo II.

Digital Dunkirk is a veterans’ coalition that locates at-risk individuals and transports them to temporary, safer locations where they await rescue and transport out of the country. Dynamo II is an air branch that assists Digital Dunkirk.

Project Dynamo has no ties to the U.S. government. Civilians run the organization.

Project Dynamo extended its efforts to Ukraine minutes after Russia began its invasion in February. They began planning operations in Ukraine after President Joe Biden said the U.S. government would not run rescue operations in the country.

Project Dynamo already had about two dozen people getting out mere minutes after people felt the first explosions in Kyiv. “They are currently traversing the Ukrainian countryside and trying to make their way to an American embassy in a neighboring country,” Project Dynamo spokesperson James Judge told Florida Politics. “The evacuation began minutes after our team on the ground physically felt the nearby explosions in Kyiv.”

Project Dynamo has raised more than $1.4 million so far. Georgedakis encourages people to offer what they can to support the Project Dynamo mission and help Americans escape an increasingly dangerous, life-threatening situation in Ukraine.

In an effort to say thank you to the hardest working members of the Good Greek team we distributed 200 turkeys to movers and drivers at all three of our locations.

Good Greek delivered the turkeys in a refrigerated truck throughout the day. Surprising workers in Ft. Lauderdale, then West Palm Beach, and finishing the day in Tampa.

Special thanks to all of the team members who helped coordinate the effort and distribute the turkeys!

The Good Greek himself, Spero Georgedakis, played a key role this summer in returning the first home run ever hit for the Miami Marlins to the man who hit it, Jeff Conine.

Plans call for the ball, which Conine hit as a member of the then-Florida Marlins in 1993, to be auctioned with the proceeds benefiting the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital.

The ball came to Georgedakis through a chain of events that culminated with Conine, former ball owner Daniel Taylor and Georgedakisrecently meeting at the Rybovich Superyacht Marina. It was a moment captured by the Palm Beach Post.

I was happy to get the ball and it was fun to meet with Daniel and Jeff – it was the first time Jeff had seen the ball in 28 years,” said Georgedakis. “I was also happy to suggest that the ball get auctioned to fund the Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital because I know Jeff has a connection with the hospital.”

Conine and his wife, Cindy, have been involved with the hospital since he came to the Marlins from the Kansas City Royals, where he started his career. The couple raises money so families can stay for free in the “Conine Clubhouse” while their children undergo treatment at the hospital.

Conine confirmed to the Post that he likes the auction idea. “At the end of the day we’re all human beings and when you can do something that can take care of somebody in a time of need, that makes me more proud than anything,” he said.

Where The Ball Came From

The road to the marina meeting started with Conine’s bat on March 5, 1993. On that day, the Marlins took the field for the first time in a spring training game. Conine hit a ball out of the park.

He told the Post that “at the time I didn’t realize the significance of that baseball. Years down the road when you think that was a first in the history of the franchise, I probably would have pursued it a little more if I had realized it back then.”

However, a man named Bill Beltinck did pursue the ball, according to Taylor. Beltinck outran a Marlins employee through a muddy area to reach the ball first. Taylor told the Post that Beltinck later turned down offers from the Marlins to get free tickets to a game in exchange for the ball.

Taylor bought the ball from Beltinck, who lived in Michigan and kept it ever since at his home in Jupiter Island.

Enter The Good Greek

Taylor turned down offers for the ball over the years. The included two Harley Davidson motorcycles worth $10,000 each and an offer for free dental work. But in recent years, he decided it was time to sell.

He was at a point where he had become frustrated with endless negotiations when a Good Greek moving truck drove by his house. Good Greek is the Official Mover of many Florida sports teams – including the Marlins – and logos of teams are on the side of the moving trucks.

Taylor saw the logos and thought: “Maybe that’s the guy.” And it was. Georgedakis purchased the ball for an undisclosed amount and then contacted Conine. That led to the meeting and the decision to pursue a charity auction.

Conine said he’s thankful to be able to make use of the ball. “That would be the ultimate,” he told the Post about auctioning the ball to raise funds for the hospital. “Everything we do with the golf tournament, the poker tournament and other things done over the years just to raise money so another family can stay free of charge, that’s what it’s all about.”

Since 1999, First Alert Chief Meteorologist Steve Weagle has pedaled through paradise to share a message about hurricane preparedness and to raise money for the American Red Cross, which helps when a hurricane hits.

This year, the COVID-19 pandemic is putting a twist on this WPTV tradition. While Steve won’t be biking from the top of the Treasure Coast down to Boca Raton, he is still leading an effort to support the American Red Cross virtually.

A new podcast from Good Greek Moving & Storage, South Florida’s most trusted mover, offers listeners the chance to pick up expert moving tips, get a glimpse inside the moving business and learn about charities, events and the people of South Florida.

Listen, Follow and Share the Podcast Here

The Good Morning With the Good Greek podcast is led by the Good Greek himself, Spero Georgedakis. A former police officer, Georgedakis has built the most recognizable and most referred moving company in Florida. It’s also the only one that offers the Best Move Ever.

Catch Good Morning with the Good Greek Live

Listen to the  Good Greek podcast now!

But Georgedakis is about more than running a successful and growing business. A native of New York City, he loves living in South Florida. That’s something that comes through in the “Good Morning With the Good Greek” podcast.

As Georgedakis said at the beginning of a recent podcast, “What’s not to love? We’re in paradise.”

The podcast is on the Good Greek site, as well as on YouTube. A new post goes up every other Saturday.

A Desire To Help People

Customer service is central to everything that Good Greek Moving & Storage does. That drive to help others is one of the reasons Georgedakis wanted to start a podcast. In a recent show, he talked about providing people moving tips and information about services Good Greek provides.

Listen to Episodes Here

“Every week, I want to give good information to people not just about who we are and what we do, but how we can help people,” Georgedakis said. “There are a lot of ways that we can, a lot of good information.”

In addition to guests who can talk about moving-related issues, the show also will feature guests from local charitable organizations that Good Greek serves and supports.

Georgedakis also offers insights into the business. For example, on Episode 2, he talked about becoming the official mover for sports teams and universities.

Official Movers For Many Teams, Schools

Good Greek Moving & Storage is the official mover of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Miami Heat, Miami Marlins, Inter Miami FC, Tampa Bay Rays, Tampa Bay Rowdies, University of Florida, University of Miami, Florida Atlantic University, and Florida International University.

So, what does “official mover” mean? Georgedakis said, “What it means is those helmets and shoulder pads – they got there somehow, behind the scenes, and most people don’t know that Good Greek does that.”

Good Greek Moving & Storage moves team equipment for every game, making sure everything arrives on time for every road game, no matter where the team is playing. The company also offers moving services to team players and coaches. For their university partners, Good Greek handles moves for faculty, students and alumni.

Asked if he ever cuts it close in delivering equipment for teams to each away game, Georgedakis said: “In my business, there is zero margin of error, so the answer is ‘no.’ We don’t even get close to that. We have a Plan A, and two Plan Bs and two plan Cs.”

Good Greek also handles many of the visiting teams coming into South Florida to play the local teams. While Good Greek is not the official mover for these teams, they learn that teams such as the Marlins “trust us and utilize us exclusively” and allow Good Greek to handle some of their moves.

“Once they get a taste of the Good Greek service, there’s no going back,” Georgedakis said.

Special Trucks For Every Team

Good Greek also has made trucks for each team. Georgedakis said he likes to have “one truck per team that personifies who they are and puts a spotlight on the relationship.” For example, the Gators truck has an alligator hood ornament with eyes that light up.

Some alumni have requested the specialty truck for their move. Georgedakis said he accommodates them when he can, but that the trucks only work with big moves. Also, the trucks are often on the road with the team’s equipment.

Why Good Greek Partnered With Teams, Universities

While he enjoys sports and likes the marketing opportunities offered by partnering with the teams, Georgedakis said the decision to seek “official mover” status runs deeper and is more about the South Florida community.

“It exemplifies our commitment to excellence,” Georgedakis said. “It’s not about the record, right? You can have a good year or a bad year. It’s not about that. They’re always out there to be the best. They’re always trying to put their best foot forward. And they’ve got a great history.”

He continued: “Whether they’re winning championships or not they’re such a big contributor to the community. Whether they win or lose they are still doing things for kids and the fans and charities out there, and that’s really why I wanted to become their partner.”

“It’s an honor to say that we are their official mover.”

That’s because giving back is an important aspect of Good Greek’s business. Georgedakis provides free moving services to organizations such as American Red Cross and the Leukemia Foundation. Good Greek employees also donate their time to such organizations.

“They really do help people, and that’s what we’re about. Success comes in many ways, and it’s not always financial.”

Good Greek Moving and Storage makes a commitment each year to give back to the South Florida community that has treated us so well. We’re proud to call South Florida our home.

Our Giving Back Holiday Season 2019 includes many programs we support. All of them do fantastic acts of charity in our community, especially for children. We support these efforts because children are South Florida’s most precious asset – and the most vulnerable.

Here are some of the efforts we are participating in for Giving Back Holiday Season 2019.

Transporting Toys for United Way

A new record has been set for the number of toys donated to the 2019 United Way toy drive at WPTV in West Palm Beach – 2,700 and counting as of mid-December! That shows the great generosity of our community. Good Greek Moving and Storage boxed up toys donated at WPTV and took them to the United Way distribution center.

In an interview, Good Greek owner Spero Georgedakis said he felt great about “doing my part” but said “it’s such a small part in comparison to all the people who donated.”

He added, “We’ve been doing this for years with WPTV. It’s a great honor and we’re happy to do it. I’ve got children of my own and I can certainly empathize with those who are less fortunate during the holidays.”

Maddie’s Fight Foundation

Maddie's Fight Foundation Logo

Good Greek also supports Maddie’s Fight Foundation, a wonderful organization that has turned heartbreak into a noble cause. The foundation is named after Madison Lane Demers. At the age of nine, she was diagnosed with Multi Centric Osteogenic Sarcoma, an extremely rare bone cancer. She passed away less than a year later, in 2017. The foundation now provides financial assistance to families of children with cancer and supports research into finding a cure for osteosarcoma.

Children’s Healing Institute Toy Drive

The Choldrens Healing Institute Logo

Good Greek also is providing transportation services for the Children’s Healing Institute Toy Drive. The institute, located in West Palm Beach, is South Florida’s leader in preventing child abuse and in providing expertise in family crisis management. The Children’s Healing Institute partners with families that have been recommended to them through many different channels such as schools, hospitals, police and community agencies. Their motto says it all: “We’re good for kids.”

NBC 6 BB&T Caravan Of Joy Toy Drive

NBC 6 Miami Caravan of Joy 2019

Good Greek is providing transportation services for the annual Caravan of Joy Toy Drive, which is now in its 22nd year. Donated toys are left at locations throughout South Florida and then transported to agencies around the area where they can be delivered to kids. It’s a wonderful drive that brings joy to kids throughout South Florida. The toys will go to organizations such as Miami Children’s Home Society, Hialeah Housing Authority and Voices of Children for Broward County.

105.5 FM Mo and Sally Morning Show Toy Drive

KOOL 105.5 Dueling Toy Drive Events

Good Greek also supported the “dueling toy drive” between Mo and Sally on the 105.5 FM Morning Show. The toys collected in this drive go to the children of people serving in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. It’s a great way of saying “thank you” to those who sacrifice to protect our country.

Good Greek Moving and Storage gladly donates time and resources to support these wonderful programs and organizations that focus on making children happier and healthier. We encourage you to also share what you can this holiday season with those less fortunate.
